Why Is Catalytic Converter Theft Such a Problem?

RI Automotive advises that catalytic converter theft is such a problem because the converters are made out of precious metals. The vehicles that are targeted most are large trucks and Toyota Prius models. We can install a new catalytic converter in your automobile if the original one has been stolen. Here are signs that someone ripped off the catalytic converter from underneath your automobile.

Loud and Roaring Engine

When you turn the key in the ignition and the engine fires up, it will be extremely loud. It will also make a roaring sound. These noises will get louder as you increase your acceleration. You may not want to drive your vehicle if the engine is too loud when you start it. Either the catalytic converter has been stolen or you have another problem with the exhaust system.

Sputtering Acceleration

A vehicle without a catalytic converter will also jerk when it accelerates. The reason why is that the engine routes the exhaust to the catalytic converter with force. Because the converter is no longer underneath the automobile to absorb the force, the acceleration will get jerky and rough.

Reduced Engine Power

You will also notice a reduction in your engine power until you start driving fast. A missing catalytic converter can affect the engine’s ability to produce low-end torque. This type of torque is the power production when you are driving at lower speeds. Your engine will struggle to operate at the speeds.

Increased Vehicle Emissions

Another problem with a stolen catalytic converter is that it increases your vehicle’s emissions because you no longer have the exhaust system part that treats them. This can leave you in a bit of trouble if you need your automobile to pass an emissions test in your state for vehicle registration.

Overwhelming Exhaust Fumes

Unfortunately, the increase in vehicle emissions can lead to overwhelming exhaust fumes that will make you sick if you continue to drive your automobile. In fact, we recommend that you avoid driving your vehicle if the catalytic converter has been stolen because you will inhale carbon monoxide.

Check Engine Warning

Finally, the check engine light will turn on because numerous sensors will detect problems due to the fact that you no longer have a catalytic converter in the exhaust system. Replacing the converter will restore your vehicle’s engine performance and turn off the check engine light.

RI Automotive in Tampa, FL, can do this, so give us a call today to schedule an appointment for a catalytic converter replacement.
