If your engine is knocking constantly, drive straight to RI Automotive so we can find the problem and fix it. In some cases, the knocking engine can become a damaged engine, which is why time is of the essence. We are going to discuss the different causes of constant engine knock below.
Lean Fuel Mixture
Problems with the combustion chamber’s detonation are the most common reason why an engine will knock. For example, if there is a lean fuel mixture in the cylinders, you will end up with multiple fireballs in each cylinder instead of just one. When these fireballs collide, they make the knocking sound that you hear. Things that can cause a lean fuel mixture include a clogged fuel filter or clogged injectors.
Low-Octane Fuel
Low-octane fuel will also create multiple fireballs in each cylinder. Always put the octane rating that your vehicle manufacturer recommends in the tank. Do not use a lower octane rating than what is recommended specifically for your engine. If you do put a lower octane rating in the tank, your engine will not constantly while you drive your automobile.
Malfunctioning Sensor
Another thing that will make your engine knock is a malfunctioning knock sensor. As its name suggests, this sensor reports a knocking engine to the engine control module. This allows the module to make adjustments in an effort to stop the knocking. A malfunctioning sensor may fail to communicate with the module.
Spark Plug Problems
Spark plug problems can also cause your engine to knock constantly. It’s possible that the plugs are misfiring and causing multiple detonations in each cylinder. The misfiring could be caused by a faulty engine control module or by worn spark plugs.
Worn Rod Bearings
There is also a condition called rod knock. In this case, the cylinders are detonating just fine. The reason you hear a knocking sound coming from the engine is that the rods are banging the pistons against the cylinder walls. This happens when the rod bearings wear out and are no longer able to move the rods up and down evenly inside the cylinders.
Loose Accessory Belt
Finally, you may hear a knocking sound if your engine’s accessory belt is loose. It will slap around inside the engine and make knocking or clapping sounds. We can tighten your accessory belt to stop the annoying noise.
