The Top Reasons Why Your Car’s Air Conditioner Isn’t Working

The weather might be cooler now, but before you know it, we’re going to be in the midst of summer heat. Now is the perfect time to have your automobile’s air conditioner inspected so you aren’t left with the shock of it not working when you need it. Many things can go wrong with your AC. RI Automotive lists the top reasons why this unit might not work when you turn it on for the first time in the summer.

Problems With the Refrigerant

Refrigerant problems are common in vehicle air conditioners if you haven’t had the system serviced in at least a year or two. Generally, you should have the refrigerant checked every spring before you really start cranking up the AC in your automobile. Common refrigerant problems include refrigerant leaks, which tend to happen around the hose connections. Dissipation also reduces refrigerant levels.

Problems With the Condenser

The condenser is an important part of your vehicle’s air conditioning system. This part takes the scalding hot refrigerant and cools it down so you get that blast of refreshing cold air through your vents. Because the condenser is located in the front of your engine, it falls prey to any road debris that can fit through your vehicle’s grille. The debris can clog or damage the condenser.

Problems With the Electricity

Your vehicle has an electrical system just as your home does. All of the wiring in your automobile is insulated to protect it from engine heat. If you drive an older automobile, or if there is an electrical malfunction in your newer automobile, you may find that your AC doesn’t work. This is likely due to frayed or broken electrical wires that have succumbed to heat and age.

Problems With the Cooling Fans

Your condenser uses cooling fans to help it cool the refrigerant just as your radiator uses radiator fans to help it cool the engine coolant. If these fans are not working properly, you’ll get hot air blowing through your vents instead of cold air because the condenser is unable to reduce the refrigerant’s temperature. You may also have a problem with the fan blower motor that blows the air into your cabin.

Problems With the Compressor

Finally, the compressor can go bad if it isn’t used enough. This might sound strange, but this part relies on usage to keep it functioning as it should be. To keep your compressor functional, it’s a good idea to run your air conditioner for 15 minutes every month throughout the year. If the compressor is malfunctioning, it will be unable to circulate refrigerant through the air conditioning system.
