The alternator provides power to the electrical system in your car. It also provides power to the battery and all of the power accessories. The alternator lasts about 100,000 miles. In terms of a timeframe, that is usually approximately 10 years. Here are signs that the alternator is going bad in your automobile.
Light Problems
One of the first things that you might notice is a problem with the lights. For example, you may find it hard to see when you are driving at night or your headlights and interior lights may flicker. The alternator should only generate up to 14.5 volts. If it generates more than this, the lights will be bright.
Dead Battery
As we mentioned above, the alternator powers many things, and one of these things is the battery. As the battery discharges while your vehicle is in operation, the alternator fills it up with more power. Consequently, if the alternator is malfunctioning, you may end up with a dead battery.
Accessory Malfunction
Speaking of malfunctioning, your vehicle’s power accessories can start to malfunction if the alternator is not producing enough power. This can mean problems with the navigation system, the USB charging ports, and the power seats or power windows. The radio may even turn off by itself.
Frequent Stalling
The alternator also provides power to the spark plugs in the cylinders so they can ignite the fuel and air. Unfortunately, if one or more of the spark plugs cannot generate a spark because they don’t have power, your engine will stall frequently, especially when you are idling.
Growling Noises
If you hear growling noises coming from the engine, this, too, could be a faulty alternator. The alternator can wear out internally and it will start to growl or squeal while it is working. You may also hear squealing coming from the alternator belt if it has gone bad.
Hot Electrical System
We mentioned above that the maximum voltage the alternator should generate is 14.5 volts. If it generates more than this, it will overheat the electrical system. Consequently, you will smell hot odors, such as burning wires, coming from the engine of your automobile.
Finally, the battery light may turn on and remain on if the alternator is going bad. It’s a good idea to head straight to our shop to avoid getting stranded with a dead battery or a dead alternator. We will test the alternator and replace it if necessary.
