Five Signs Your Car Has a Fuel Injector Problem

You may notice if your automobile has a fuel injector problem. RI Automotive advises that the common problems that occur with fuel injectors are clogs or leaks. It’s important to have your fuel injectors cleaned every 30,000 to 50,000 miles to make sure carbon deposits don’t clog them. As the fuel injectors age, they may eventually start to leak. Here are the signs of clogged or leaking fuel injectors.

Dancing Tachometer Needle

A strange thing that happens when your fuel injectors are not operating as they should be is your tachometer needle will dance up and down. You will notice the needle registering higher RPMs even though your vehicle hasn’t shifted gears. This is because the combustion chamber is getting an unpredictable amount of fuel coming from the clogged or leaking injectors. This directly affects the engine’s revolutions per minute.

Engine Misfires

You will also notice that your engine misfires frequently when there is a problem with the injectors. Generally, you can feel and hear the misfires. Your engine will stutter and it may even backfire. Unfortunately, you will continue to have a problem with your engine misfiring until you either have the fuel injectors professionally cleaned or replaced.

Poor Fuel Economy

If the injectors are leaking, you may notice a difference in your vehicle’s fuel economy. Unfortunately, this difference is a reduction in the gas mileage. If you have been filling up your automobile more often than you normally do, it’s possible that the engine is burning away excess fuel that is leaking out of the fuel injectors. We can inspect the injectors to see if that’s the problem.

Rough Idling

A fuel injector problem can also make your engine’s idle very rough. This is one of the easiest signs to notice because when you are sitting at an idle your focus goes directly to the engine. If the engine is sputtering and struggling to run and you feel your vehicle shaking, bring your car, truck, or utility vehicle to our shop so we can find out what the problem is and whether that problem is the fuel injectors.

Dead Engine

Finally, problems with the fuel injectors can cause a dead engine. Specifically, if they are clogged to the point that no gasoline can get through them, you will be unable to start your automobile. Again, it is unfortunate you won’t be able to start your car, truck, or utility vehicle until the fuel injectors are cleared.
