Five Signs I’ve Got a Bad Power Steering Pump

There are two types of power steering systems in automobiles: hydraulic and electric. If your car, truck, or utility vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic power steering system, you have a power steering pump that circulates the power steering fluid through the system. It is this fluid that helps you turn your steering wheel easily. RI Automotive advises that the power steering pump will not last forever. Here are signs that your power steering pump is going bad.

1. Power Steering Fluid Leak

If you see red spots or puddles on your garage floor underneath the engine, it’s possible that your power steering pump is leaking. Unfortunately, power steering fluid isn’t the only red fluid in your engine. You might also have red coolant. Check your power steering fluid level to see if it is low. If it is, you likely have a power steering fluid leak.

2. Metal in the Power Steering Fluid

If you see metal flecks in the power steering fluid when you check it, this is a very bad sign. This is an indication that the power steering pump is disintegrating into the power steering fluid. Unfortunately, this problem cannot be repaired. Rather, you must replace the power steering pump with a new one to stop the deterioration into the power steering fluid.

3. Noises When You Turn the Steering Wheel

Another sign that your power steering pump is going bad is if you hear noises when you turn your steering wheel. In most cases, these noises will get louder the tighter you turn the wheel. The most common sound is a groaning noise that makes it sound as if your car doesn’t want to turn. You might also hear whining or squealing sounds.

4. Steering That Is Slow or Nonresponsive

If your steering is not responding, your power steering pump is likely going bad. You may turn your steering wheel, but your vehicle may not change directions. This is an indication that the pump is not circulating the power steering fluid through the system. It can also be a sign of suspension problems.

5. A Steering Wheel That Is Difficult to Turn

Finally, a faulty power steering pump will make it difficult to turn your steering wheel. Again, this is because the pump is not circulating the power steering fluid through the system. Without the help of the fluid, it will feel as if you are driving an automobile equipped with manual steering.
