Automotive Care 101

Owning a car is a major investment. And with the shortage and rising prices of new vehicles, it only makes sense to keep your vehicle maintained and running on all cylinders. At RI Automotive, we want every vehicle that comes to our shop to stay on the road and running smoothly for as long as possible. Use these car care tips so that yours will do just that.

Keeping Up With You Maintenance Schedule

How does the old saying go? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That applies in most aspects of your life, but it plays a huge role in keeping your vehicle on the road for as long as possible. If you aren’t sure what your service schedule should look like, we invite you to discuss it with one of our experts.

But in general, vehicles require the following maintenance, that the very least:

  • Regular Oil Changes
  • Brake Service
  • Tire Maintenance
  • Transmission Service
  • Fluid Checks and Service

Keeping It Clean

Much like your home, your vehicle is your showpiece. Unlike your home, this showpiece travels with you everywhere you go. Keeping your vehicle clean inside and out will ensure that you give the right first impression. Wash the exterior of your car regularly, especially during pollen season.

As for the interior. Avoid leaving food or debris in your vehicle and keep it vacuumed. Do a little research to find the best type of cleaner for your upholstery and never allow a spill to set.

Checking Your Tires

The tires on your vehicle are a huge factor in terms of driveability and safety. Not only do you need to watch the treads and replace them when they get too worn out, you also need to pay close attention to your tire pressure. Tires that are overfilled run the risk of a blowout and tires that are too low will decrease the efficiency of your car and put you in danger for a flat.

Watching For Trouble

Even the most minor of automotive issues can grow and turn into more when they are left unattended. Early detection is key in ensuring that you get the repairs you need before you run into more trouble. The good thing is that most of the time your vehicle will let you know if you just know what to look for.

Some of the biggest signs that it is time to make a trip to the mechanic are:

  • New or changing noises
  • Your check engine light is on
  • Your brakes are behaving differently
  • You are experiencing vibrations or a rough ride
  • There is an odd smell coming from under the hood or through the vents
  • Your engine is sputtering, stalling, or overheating

These are just to name a few. Anytime you suspect that there is something going on with your car, don’t ignore it.
